Realized yesterday that it was Abe’s and my anniversary (when we started dating) and that we have been together for 21 years! Our relationship can officially drink. And we are so down with it that to celebrate we forgot to get presents, fancy dinner or dessert and instead watch Mr. and Mrs. Murder (on Acorn TV—this is at least my third watch-through but Abe’s first) and ate baked potatoes for dinner with broccoli, and then had home-made peanut butter and chocolate popsicles for dessert. It was delightful. He is my favorite person and I wish he could work from home all year round.
I had a blast at Senior Day at Hovander Park. People were really receptive to our anthology. We encouraged a lot of “non-writers.” We gave away a ton of poetry books. I made some connections that might lead to future activities. We were right next to PSE who was giving away not only tote bags but you could win like $200 off your energy bill!
I do a fair bit of freelance work and always mean to tell you when it is out but from the time I work on it to the time it is released can be months to a year. But now my list of the publications I have worked on is up to date. Let’s start oldest to newest but I’m stopping at 2022. Next time 2023. Just remember—none of these are things I get royalties on so don’t feel the need to rush out and buy copies. Sorry if some of these are duplicates but they weren’t on my list for some reason.
Call of the Reed Warbler by Charles Massy (Chelsea Green, 2018, proofreader)—I really enjoyed this one.
Dirt to Soil by Gabe Brown (Chelsea Green, 2018, proofreader)
Koji Alchemy by Rich Shih and Jeremy Umansky (Chelsea Green, 2020, proofreader)—This one makes me want to learn to do all this delicious sounding umami, but it is also scary because a lot of it is “let it sit out.”
Dancing with Bees by Brigit Strawbridge Howard (Chelsea Green, 2020, proofreader)—Love this one. Highly recommend this read. She is based in the UK, so it is specific to her area, but it is really inspiring. Makes me want to go out and watch all the bees in my area.
Bringing Back the Beaver by Derek Gow (Chelsea Green, 2020, proofreader)—Another one I really love. He is very funny and a little ridiculous, but in a good way because it means not only do things get done but funny things can happen.
Fermentation as Metaphor by Sandor Ellix Katz (Chelsea Green, 2020, proofreader)—Beautiful. This is a lot of microscopic photos of the yeasts and stuff that make fermentation.
Forager Chef’s Book of Flora by Alan Bergo (Chelsea Green, 2021, proofreader)
Cold-Hardy Fruits and Nuts by Scott Serrano and Allyson Levy (Chelsea Green, 2022, proofreader)—I want to plant so many fruit and nut trees now.
Home-Scale Forest Garden by Dani Baker (Chelsea Green, 2022, proofreader)
Wildcrafted Vinegar by Pascal Baudar (Chelsea Green, 2022, proofreader)—I like vinegar but not pickled things (I know, it’s weird). I wish I did like pickled things. Though I tried pickled daikon and loved that.
History Comic: The Transcontinental Railroad by Andy Hirsch (First Second, 2022, lettering)
Small-Scale Poultry Flock by Harvey Ussery (Chelsea Green, 2022, proofreader)—I made a comment on this about something that he said could be hard but I said a knitter would find easy. Apparently, he put a smiley face next to it and he is usually a rather serious fellow. That made my day.
Einstein by Jim Ottaviani, art by Jerel Dye (First Second, 2022, lettering)—Both these are great creators. Jim Ottaviani is super nice (he blurbed an Awesome ‘Possum volume and was generally encouraging). And Jerel Dye . . . might be in the volume that Jim Ottaviani blurbed?!
Quick reminder, you can get a robot figure from me as an add-on from the Universal Flaws of Robotics Kickstarter. But you can also get bookmarks, one of which will be this cute little librarian robot I drew. I had so much fun. This little robot is so cute! Ben Wright-Heuman, a buddy of mine and one of the two guys running CanonWrite Productions, voiced over a video of this illustration being made. You can see part way through I changed the canvas size because I realized we were making a different size bookmark than I had guessed.
I have to re-recommend Lost in Play. Abe started playing it and loves it so much he stopped playing it because he didn’t want to get to the end. OK. I am tired now. And I have two freelance jobs so I better stop writing little notes to you.
Sorry for wasting your time. I hope your day gets better!
